Adult Programming at Old Ship 2011 - 2012


In harmony with Unitarian Universalist principles and sources of inspiration, learning opportunities at Old Ship serve our community by encouraging spiritual growth and the free and responsible search for truth and meaning.

Gatherings are in the Parish House parlor unless otherwise noted.

Older youth may find many of these programs of interest, and are encouraged and welcome to attend.

We are ask participants to contribute $35 for the first course they attend (sliding scale according to need).

There is no fee for the drop-in ongoing groups, or if otherwise noted.

Autumn

The Poetry of Peace

Four Sessions: Wed, Sep 14 — Oct 5, 1:00 pm or 7:00 pm

Led by Elizabeth Torrey and Ken Read-Brown

Poetry speaks to our hearts never more powerfully than when evoking the tragedy of war and the loveliness of peace. We will draw on poetry from around the world, with a focus on American and Middle-Eastern poets.

The New UU

Four Sessions, Wed, Oct 16 — Nov 9, 7:00 pm — 8:30 pm

Designed for newcomers to Old Ship and/or Unitarian Universalism, but open to anyone interested in learning more about UU history, theology, governance, and the ways in which Unitarian Universalism transforms lives and helps create a better world.

Immigration as a Moral Issue

Six Sessions, Thurs, Oct 6 — Nov 10, 7:00 pm

Led by Eva Marx and Ursula Stone

Guided by Unitarian Universalist values, what would be a just and moral immigration policy? This six-week curriculum developed by the UUA addresses topics including factors contributing to human migration, international and U.S. law, myths and realities concerning immigration, the treatment of immigrants, and actions we might take to address this complex issue.

This is a gentle class, suitable for all levels. You will leave feeling relaxed and ready for a good night's sleep.
Bring a yoga mat or large beach towel and dress in comfortable clothes. Limited to 10.

Old Ship Goes to the Opera

Led by Tino Fernandes (no fee beyond the ticket price)

Old Ship opera buffs (you?) will head to Randolph Theater to see live broadcast from the MET of either Mozart’s Don Giovanni on 10/29 or Gounod’s Faust on 12/10 (likely a 1 or 1:30 start). If people want a preview, this will be arranged a week before. If you’ve wanted an intro to opera, this is your chance to learn about an art form that combines many others, and to have a good time too.

Spiritual Elderhood

An elder is an older member of the family, tribe, congregation, or community, who has authority and influence. This course is about the process of becoming and being a spiritual elder – one who ages in wholeness, with integrity, love, and purpose. Participants will need the book From Ageing to Sageing: A Profound New Vision of Growing Older, by Zalman Schachter-Shalomi.

Old Ship Sangha

Every Monday Evening, 7:00 — 8:30 pm

All are welcome to this weekly gathering to practice Buddhist meditation in community. Each evening includes sitting and walking meditation, reading, and discussion.

The Way of the Bodhisattva

First and Third Sunday mornings, 8:30 am (no mtgs. in summer, begins 9/18)

Half an hour of sitting meditation, followed by an hour conversation based on a Buddhist text. This year we will be reading The Wise Heart, by Jack Kornfield. Newcomers are warmly welcomed – no previous experience with Buddhism needed

Living By Heart
